student athletes

we've now got three student athletes on the watkins team.

1. cooper's loving the first grade. he lucked out and got the kind of teacher that every mother dreams of. he amazes me with his school work. since he's one of the oldest in the class & kind of brilliant it makes sense that he would be the smartest in the class. but that's not the amazing part. what's so rad about this guy is how he uses his down time at school. he finishes all of his assignments in record time & rather than sit around he challenges himself to take his assignments one step further. if the teacher asks them to copy his spelling words he will copy his spelling words then write sentences for each word. if the teacher asks for sentences he writes paragraphs. oh, and he rarely comes home with homework because this time-manager finishes most of it while in class. he's just like his mama. and i couldn't be more proud. he just started another year of soccer & he couldn't be more excited. soccer season is his favorite time of the year. he got his favorite coach, daddy, again this year. he's kind of a natural when it comes to managing sports & school. when cooper's teacher asked him what made him special he said, "i'm super fast & super smart." (coop was asked to write sentences for his spelling words. the word was hat. he wrote "the man had 1 hat on monday, he had 3 hats on tuesday, the net week he had 10 hats!" so creative. then for the word what he wrote, "what was the present? it was a surprise. i wonder what it will be. a boat? or a big toy master? now it is night time i woke up and it was a big remote boat. it was my first guess! yesssssss!" um, brilliant.

2. tj started preschool. it's called storybook school & it's a co-op. so far he loves it. i wasn't sure how he would do but since a few of his old friends are in the class he seems pretty comfortable & confident. i taught the first week & loved it. the kids are awesome, the curriculum is so fun, & i just love seeing a different side of tj. on days he doesn't go to storybook school tj & i do our homeschool. we've been doing "school" since january but we've really stepped it up this school year. we have our homeschool preschool every morning (he insists. in fact, he won't leave the house until his school is done.) so far he's mastered shapes, colors, & coating, & he's half way through numbers. we have weekly themes & field trips. each day we have art, reading, a fine motor-skill, & a gross motor-skill activities beyond our worksheets. i love this quality time i get with my middlest child & he amazes me with how quickly he catches on to everything. he has a unique way of thinking & every day he comes up with something brilliant that just amazes me. he has an incredible memory, & a real knack for distinguishing differences, & navigating problems. tj was going to start soccer this year but with two other student athletes in the house i decided i couldn't take on another time commitment. but he thinks he's on cooper's team & participates in all the practices.

3. todd started the executive mba program at university of hawaii. this is a distance learning program so he's able to do most of his schooling from maui & just travels to oahu every month or so. he couldn't be more excited about this new phase of his life. needless to say, this is a real adjustment for our whole family. he now works full-time & attends school full-time, which combined equals about a billion hours a week. so we squeeze in family time every chance we get. between school, work, & coaching todd doesn't get much downtime but when he does you can usually spot him on the waves or passing a ball at the park.

(just cause it doesn't feel right writing about 3 of the 4 i'll add a little tid-bit about the mighty. if he's awake while tj & i do our homeschool he always joins in. he either colors in his favorite coloring book for the day or he works on color activities with me. so far he knows blue, orange, white, & "hulk smash". and he's a huge fan of the number 4. he hates the 3 hours a week when tj is away at school. i was so excited to have some alone time with my baby but he prefers the company of his brothers. he may love soccer more than any of my other boys. he wants to play all the time. and he insists on practicing with cooper's team, through the entire 2 hour practice. he dribbles, passes, & shoots right along with the u8's.)

the big 3-0

when did my husband get so old? (kidding, only kidding. let's be honest 30 is the new 20.) i can't believe how much he has accomplished in his short 30 years & i can't wait to see what more he has in store. he is the most adventurous, energetic spontaneous man i know. sometimes this makes me want to jump off a really high cliff but most of the time i just admire him for it. he is smart. really, really smart. he understands things in ways i just don't get, like stocks & geography. he is unbelievably hard working. he never cuts corners & always puts his best effort into whatever he does. even when it comes to the simplest things. he takes the time necessary to make sure every thing he does is top notch. he is a man of integrity. he says what he means & means what he says. even if what he says is a little harsh. he is strong & incredibly athletic. there is no sport he can't do or excel at. he is extremely ambitious. always setting goals & counquering them. he gets along well with virtually everyone. he is the greatest daddy. he loves his boys with all his heart & is commited to their health & happiness. combine all that with his natural good looks & charming demeanor & yes, you've got the full package. lucky me. happy birthday, shnookems!

take your child to work day

a few weeks ago cooper attended work with todd as part of the national take-your-child-to-work day. coop was beyond excited. he originally planned to wear "fancy clothes" to work. when the time came to get ready he decided he wanted to be comfortable but he would still wear a tie, you know, to keep things professional. he packed his backpack completely full of snacks & little things to keep himself occupied. as it turned out, he didn't need any of it. he spent the day working. todd is great at adapting jobs for little minds. he planned a full day of activities to teach coop & help him feel involved. cooper shredded, filed, cut, stapled, counted, distributed, colored, played ping-pong, & took a tour of the grounds. it just so happened that cooper came to job corps on the day of their talent show. he loved watching the various students show off their skills-most of the students are from other countries around the south pacific so there was a lot of dancing & music. coop especially loved eating at the cafeteria. he had two full plate of pig. i think it's safe to say cooper loved every moment of his day at work. in fact, he has asked me at least 6 times since then when the next take-your-child-to-work day is.

(excuse the one poor picture-it seems that i accidentally deleted all the pictures i took with my fancy camera & i am left with only this iphone shot.)

my heart.

i love this photo. (i only wish t.j. was in it.) it was one of those rare moments when i happened to have my camera & they just happened to pose perfectly. i just can't get enough of those little smile. and todd's affection for his eldest son is written all over his face. precious.

he loves me, he really really loves me!

i'm not one to brag.  i think it's tacky.  but this weekend my handsome hubby did something so beyond thoughtful i can't not mention it.  my dearest dear made a 10 hour road trip straight down to las vegas & back with the selfless desire to buy something special for me.  and boy, oh boy did he accomplish that!  is it my birthday?  nope.  anniversary?  nope.  he did it just because.  isn't he wonderful!  everyday i thank the lord for blessing me with such a remarkable man to spend forever with.

(my special surprise.  isn't she lovely!)

gone but not forgotten

it's nice to know that even though todd hasn't played for byu in 5.5 years his career there is still remembered.

a giant poster of one of todd's most remarkable catches still hangs in the indoor facility
one of todd's raider jerseys, some of his trading cards, & an autographed photo of him catching a ball for the raiders is displayed in legends hall

we are so proud of todd & all that he has accomplished on & off of the field.  he is such an example of hard work, dedication, diligence, & of course, limitless talent.  todd is one of the few people that i know who really can accomplish anything that he puts his mind to.  he is absolutely amazing.  we can't wait to see what he will do for the giants (once this silly lockout ends).

camp out

last night cooper hosted his very first camp out.
todd, cooper, & 4 cousins slept in a tent in the backyard.

it was the coolest thing to my 3 year old son (and my 27 year old husband).
(it was too chilly for t.j. so he had a special snuggle-fest with mommy inside.)

locked out

it's official.  the nfl has declared a lockout against the players.  lovely (can you hear the sarcasm in my voice?).
i just don't understand.  todd has always been the kind of guy that people like.  he's always invited to every event.  why then is his own employer locking him out?  it's so silly to me.  i just hope that they clear this mess up soon so that it won't effect the 2011 season.  todd is ready & rearing to play.  and the longer they delay the more time i have to wait to move to new york!  i am ready to try out life on the east coast!  if you care to follow up on the ongoings of the lockout you can keep up here.  (so maybe the information will be a little biased towards the players' point of view, but hey, todd is a player so we naturally side with the nflpa.)

great news

we have some rather exciting news...

todd is officially a new york giant!

we are so excited for this new change.  todd is excited to play for such a well respected team.  cooper cannot wait to see new york & the central park zoo (he thinks the animals from madagascar will be there to talk to him). and, let's be honest, red & blue are much more flattering on me than black & white.  t.j. is indifferent to the change.

"say, hello, to the new york giants!"

why i love him so

1 year ago today i married the man of my dreams.

has it really been only a year?  it is so hard to remember my life pre cooper & todd.  it seems like they have been with me forever.

i thought i would celebrate this anniversary by sharing some of the reasons why i love my hubby so much...

1.  he always inspires & encourages me to be a better person.
2.  he is the world's greatest daddy.
3.  he is just plain fun.  everyday with his is an adventure.
4.  he doesn't mind taking the chicken meat off the bone for me.
5.  he supports my sweat suits addiction.
6.  he puts a great deal of thought & research into every big decision he makes.
7.  he makes me the most delish milkshakes whenever i request.
8.  have you seen him?  he is such a hottie!
9.  he makes up the most hilarious raps for me & cooper.  i just cannot help but giggle.
10.  he is quite the snuggle-bug
11.  he is just as easy-going & chillax as me.  we really are 2 peas in the same pod.

here are some of my favorite photos that we have taken over the past 6 years.
